decline of the small web
Or why I write here.
Rather long comment thread on the bubble BBS touching on feelings of burn out and the rise and fall of geminispace, or at least the perception of such.
As someone who is very new to said space, having only discovered the small web at the end of May, just over a month ago. I can easily be said to be in my honeymoon phase. I touched on some of what attracted me to this space in my inaugural post.
As I started to write more, both my thoughts and code to enable sharing these thoughts, I became further and further enamoured with this text first world. I read excellent pieces of writing from people who seemed to share many of my philosophical and political leanings. I relish the constraints of both the format and the elegant technical solutions people have come up with in building applications. Ultimately I am here for the words, I don't play games or need services delivered via this space. Its about communication.
Though I don't really care who is reading what I write, there is almost something of a performance art of the process. I am my own most important reader, as the first entry in this log states, the utter simplicity of the format and the unlikelihood of anyone reading these words is entirely freeing. It feels akin to a message in a bottle in a digital ocean.
