I just learned about Hopper, a Gopher & Gemini client for the Playdate. Apparently, it was released two weeks ago.

Makes me wish I had one to try this out on (although the unlit screen kinda remains a showstopper for me).

The screen is extremely legible and works amazingly well. Coincidentally, I just dug mine out of a drawer and powered it up 2 days ago. I will give it a spin.

I have not had problems with it not being backlit

Ah interesting. What would you say is the dimmest environment you can comfortably use it in? How about a room with a single lit table lamp, but you're not sitting next to the lamp?

I think that you would benefit by being near said table lamp. I found it was a lot harder to photograph than to look at. I have used it in my bedroom at night with a table lamp next to me on and nothing else.

Typing on this is not terribly fun. You get an up down list of letters in alphabetical order. There are three columns: capital letters, lower case letters, and symbols/numbers. And it isn't the fastest for sure. Takes about 5 seconds to retrieve and render a page. Certificates are not supported (so no posts from my Playdate.) Images are also not supported. But it seems functional for reading and has all the emojis. You can scroll using the crank mechanism but I don't know why you would when the arrows are much easier.

Edited to add: actually emoji support seems more limited. Eg I went to Chilly weather and none of the symbols are showing up for weather conditions.

Unfortunately, I do not have a bank card, even though this project looks appealing and reasonable.

Sadly, I don't own a playdate device, but this is honestly pretty neat too.

Thanks for sharing this one! I’ll try it for the fun of it. Would be interesting to see what play date specific capsules could be made.

quite some time ago, I've got RGB20s, it's in color and substantialy cheaper. (Although there's chinese feel all over this thing).

There's whole emulationstation on board:

so technically you can add anything there.

Moreover, you could probably replace whole ArkOS with something custom.

TBF, I haven't used it much, my hands get tired quickly, and I wasn't very motivated to experiment more with it
