excited for the upcoming trip. 99% sure ashley is not a serial killer but if you are ashley please do not kill me. i know you would not kill a fellow asics wearer.
spent last night reading fourteen which is such a funny story, one of the great horror comedies for sure. i still have a long way to go tho
shoutout to bugleague who allowed me to realize i love horror shit, it's like a whole genre i didn't engage with for most of my life and now i do and it's awesome

zine release went about as good as it could possibly have gone. float trip was fun but exhausted me into a little grain. hanging out with my dad: odd. hanging out with my littlest brother: good.
now for two reviews
MY REVIEW OF: my feet
as a pisces i am uniquely qualified to review my own feet. well i have to say, i am exhausted dealing with my feet. after wearing the hokas for about a month, what i have learned is that i really do need shoes that cater to pronation. my theory is that when i decided to switch from asics to brooks ~2 years ago, that particular pair of brooks just happened to work for me. no other "normal" shoe, not even the upgraded brook shoe, has felt good and my pinky toe keeps slamming into the outside wall of the shoe
thus, what i think is the true solution to all my problems is to go back to the asics (shoutout ashley). luckily i had a barely used pair in my basement. i will sell my hokas and continue my pronation life. why are my feet so weird? it's in the stars baby. but also probably because i ran cross country in really shitty shoes for years.
MY REVIEW OF: the drifting classroom (light spoilers)
there seems to be mixed opinion on the drifting classroom online. which i get - it feels like a story written for a different time. it has almost nothing to do with the manga of today. it is a rather grotesque lord-of-the-flies scenario and a heavy-handed message about the excesses of society. but i really liked it. it is this brutal depiction of humanity but, and i think this is the key, it's never cynical. the evils it portrays are more sad than edgy.
it is, for the most part, a story about what children even are - are they the most or least capable among us at having hope, loving, hating, etc? what can they do that adults can't, or vice versa? near the beginning of the story, it is posited that children are the only ones who could even accept the story's scenario at all (that being that their entire school is transported into a wasteland future) -- none of the adults even believe it's happening. but the character who posits that idea also warns the rest of the children about its menacing counter: that because children are open to believing, they need to be careful not to believe in too much, to believe in ideas that will get them killed, turn cultish, kill each other, etc.
which is kind of the thesis that describes the rest of the story, and that story goes in all sorts of crazy directions. it really landed the ending too. somehow i've been finding all this great art lately. good start to the sabbatical

this is one of those things that isn't actually that funny but it was making me crack up last night
the album itself is so bad... but maybe good?
review of space funeral:
nowhere near as close to my heart as anthology of the killer, but i imagine it had more impact in a pre-undertale, "came out when rowen was 14" era. if i would've played it then i would have been enamored
getting impulsive tattoed
###jun24 2

two reviews for flounder today...
spoilers for both!
1. anthology of the killer
what an amazing game. one of my most favorite things in a long time.
BB is such a great character and after a bit of a jank start the game gets into this great rhythm of exploring and then getting chased around, the writing is so good and the fact that BB is a zinester is icing on the cake, i love how in ears of the killer you get into the nitty gritty of zine distro, i have never seen that in a game or anything (though i'm sure that's just because i don't have my finger on the pulse of every relevant scene...)..
the artstyle is impeccable and the other characters are fantastic too (i liked tammy, the weepster, and the killer the most) ... ugh it's just so good and relevant to my heart i barely know how to talk about it. incredibly inspiring. i knew about thecatamites but i never played any of his other games (i may have played goblet grotto for like five minutes once) but now i want to play like everything he's ever made
2. the honourable schoolboy
in a completely different world, rowen is also a new fan of english writer john le carre, who does not mention zines once unfortunately (although leaving a secret report at a dead drop is kind of like distributing a zine......)
i didn't like this quite as much as tinker tailer soldier spy - TTSS is so tight and claustrophobic and puts you deep into the mind of mr george smiley, the stakes are high and anyone in the book could a villain, thrilling and tense. in mario hack terms, TTSS is kaizo and the honourable schoolboy is a romp. a fun romp though.
case in point, in TTSS you have to read like 90% of the book before you even figure out what "tinker tailor soldier spy" means in relation to the story... in the honourable schoolboy you meet this guy Jerry Westerby and he's like "hey guys i'm the honourable schoolboy" and then you spend most of the novel with him, which is cool i like jerry but i would frankly rather hang out with george smiley.
still, an extremely well-written book. some of my favorite parts were (1) when doc di salis freaks out and almost fucks up his undercover questioning because he's too big of a nerd (2) charlie marshall and his rickety-ass plane (3) smiley hanging a blown up ID photo of karla in his office and everyone thinking that's super weird (4) when sam collins and fawn leave the room so quickly it's described like a cartoon (5) when smiley and lizzy's ex-husband make understanding "women-am-i-right" eye contact and they're both super embarrassed about it (6) connie sachs bringing her dog to a meeting (7) jerry westerby saying "super" and "sport" to everyone, no exceptions

i have decided to take a Fake Sabbatical. what this means is i pretend i'm on sabbatical but i still have to go to work. what i want is to more studiously research Art, so i can make a new interesting Art. rowen's ladder is, in a way, the final form of the last three years of my Art, just like how "hot yoga altered physique" was the final form of my art from college. i must change myself again to bring out a new piece of myself. i must sabbatical
###jun19

listening to the odelay cd bugleague got me like damn this guy i named my dog after kinda slaps

sloopy mccoy is kind of the beck of st louis
###jun16
feeling like i have consumed some good art lately. been tryna knock out my (far too lengthy) list of recommendations and turns out my friends and acquaintances have good taste
###jun15 2
wow i love anthology of the killer have you played this @starjump ? is this something all the online queer gamer folks have already played, am i late to the party
###jun15
my appetite for vacation is voracious
good day, moldgold showed me inside lemp (where they have their practice space) and it was awesome. they have a crazy freight elevator and everything. seeing a real drummer’s drumset made me feel like i need to punk out my drums. i gotta make my drums cool guys
now i gotta take a freakin chill pill, been doin so much i forgot how to do nothing
###jun14
like the need for balance in all life, you must balance the friend and the acquaintance. on thursday night, my friends and i got ice cream and riffed and walked around in the park and it was awesome. then tonight i hung out with an acquaintance and learned the most effective way to choose what movie to watch and that was awesome too. they bless me from all sides
i sent an email to myself some days ago that said “stop taking things so seriously” and i’ve been living by that, and it’s been great. i forgot how much better that makes everything. my late great uncle taught me that and i want to stick to it
###jun13 2

the narrator for "the honourable schoolboy" is having to do a bunch of fake american accents and it's awesome
also i was in a meeting with another department yesterday and i was like im literally in a le carre book rn
i also love how whenever peter guillam sidekicks for george smiley all the other important old british men have sidekicks that sneer at him. they have their little sidekick war
###jun11
sleepy this morning but feeling proud of myself, got everything ready for my zine release, got my license and cards renewed after losing my wallet, and, here's the kicker, my ddr mat was malfunctioning and i opened it up and fixed it like a real techhead (it was an easy fix :P)
excited for the little bit of lull next week... i really do want to tackle cleaning my basement!
GAMER CORNER
two gamer topics today
topic one:
been playing a lot of into the breach this last week, it's a really fun game. i have a soft spot for isometric tactics games because Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was one of my favs as a kid. it was the first game i played that felt like it had a firm hold on the world it created, it was so big and looked lovely and the story was the craziest i had seen as a nine year old. i played it again a few years ago and it's still great but it's also INCREDIBLY easy, and into the breach, while basically having no story and an extremely simply premise, is hard! and that's fun
i want to play the OG final fantasy tactics soon. i know they just announced a remake but i think i can get the old version on my vita (the one true video game system), maybe that'll be the next game i play
topic two:
i truly feel like i'm done buying new consoles. the ps5 is cool but it looks like shit. the nintendo switch 2 is just the nintendo switch 1 but you can play the new mario kart. i'm not interested. there are enough video games made now and i only really play like five per year. sorry mario. i will remember you as you were
###jun10 2
i love hideo kojima. i hope he gets to marry hunter schafer one day
###jun10
trying to pick which @bugleague poems they should read at my zine release (they want me to choose) and there's too many good ones
also reminded of the mr beast voice "we just killed two birds by blowing up the entire earth" bit and chuckling at #work
###jun9 2
i like this youtube channel because every video description features an insane explanation of how they crank out music so fast
alexander mcqueen featured wikipedia article!! astrological sign; a return

waiting in line at the dmv
waiting at a coffee shop while waiting in line at the dmv. i like hanging out at the coffee shop with nothing to do. makes me wanna be unemployed tbh
dmv over. proud of myself for going only three days after losing my wallet
can someone tell me who in stl plays music like this
###jun8
waiting in line for a pretzel at the ballgame
this has been your flounder update
###jun6
i think the true crux of the problem that is "being bored at work" is that it forces you out of the moment. in most of life you can live in the present. when you are bored at work you must project yourself elsewhere, to the internet or the past or the future, all of which, when lived in for too long, can cause you ill
any philosophers ever talk about this, my flounder philosoheads?
###jun5 2
it may finally be time to organize my basement
organizing your basement is like the secret top of maslows pyramid
###jun5
back on top vis-a-vis the mini. i don't think i'll ever lose again
conversely, i've been fucked by the big crossword too many times lately. bad habit forming of: struggling, then going to reddit where everyone's got their pinkies out clinking wine glasses going oh ho ho another lovely puzzle by the times, clever clever, a little on the easy side though
###jun4 2
for the first time in a little over a year, i have a true obsession. the last time was the three body problem trilogy, this time it's the george smiley vs karla trilogy. i love this pottering old man!!!!!!
###jun4
why are there no snacks in my office. i need snacks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
update: they made us all go to the basement cuzza the tornado so i had a poptart from the vending machine
###jun3
somehow in the last three months i managed to become actually disillusioned with social media. i still go on it but i have no idea how to use it or what to do, it's all just muscle memory. i get nothing out of it whereas before i at least got something out of it. although instagram is unfortunately still necessary to learn about what's happening in the city
i think i need to foot off the gas a bit, i've been running around too much
ok after stopping and thinking about it for three seconds im actually in a really good spot right now im just letting my anxiety claw me for no reason. CLASSIC
###jun2 2
every time you disparage the arch a new piss bottle appears in the streets of st louis
just watched the tinker tailor soldier spy movie with gary oldman and i literally think if i hadnt just read the book i wouldve had no idea what was happening in that film
###jun2
i can in fact flirt with the famous
watched treeprophet aka "mothbaby's bf" (where's the ring, amirite) play super mario sunshine last night and that game is fucking crazy. has to be the wildest mario game ever made. they were going evil mode with it
just finished TTSS and i am surprised by this but i loved it. george smiley is like the antithesis of many detectives in fiction -- he has no quirks and is so good at his job he has become boring in all other aspects of his life. his most standout character trait is that his wife cheats on him all the time and people constantly talk to him about this, i think because there's nothing else to talk to him about. but somehow, this makes him astoundingly likable. he's like a real smart guy you meet in the world
surprisingly gay book too. i think i will read the sequel!
###may31
reasonably productive day, did 4 of the 6 tasks from previous entry🫡might do another before bed. also a lot of TTSS and into the breach
celebrity date tomorrow, wish me luck
###may30 2
took me a while to get into it, but im really enjoying tinker tailor soldier spy. it’s like if the nonprofit work drama was important to the nation. i think this is why i didnt like conclave, hardly went far enough with the dram
stayed up too late playing video games. BAD
rowen tomorrow before you play into the breach again you have to
- print the return label for your package
- cut paper for zine
- fix zine file
- print zine (80ish copies)
- fold, flatten, staple
- write the letters you have to write
mmkay?
###may30
hi flounder, my private journal website. does anyone else put a pen in their mouth and then click the pen with your tongue? it makes my tongue feel powerful
tbh i already feel freer having divested myself of the moment zine work... it doesn't truly take up too much of my time but i think the spirit of the change has made me determined to try new projects!!!
###may29
many things happening in my life but i feel like i am also reaching a nice calm spot. tying up some loose ends, consolidating to the shit that matters. real step ~7 in a self help book vibes tbh

finished the zine. i am honestly a little terrified of how it's going to look on the big fancy paper

there is this one woman at work (in another department) who will always email you if you email her back. even if your email is like "got it. thanks!" she will email you "awesome. have a great day! enjoy this wonderful weather." and then if you were to for some reason email her "you too!" she would email you back "mr. conry, i hope both our days are marvelous!" and so on. it is endearing and funny. you can make the conversation go on for as long as you want

i think the unfortunate thing about child rowen's poetry, in terms of its potential today, is that i knew i was clever. i was trying too hard to be clever. there is no innocence in it, only the beginnings of craft. the innocence came in when i turned ~22
i like this map of "megaregions" in the US where they very kindly included st louis in the great lakes one. they truly did not need to do that

once again helped O with her yearly montessori GSA zine last night and the little GSA kids come up with so much good stuff. im gonna have kids do my next zine for me

###may16
here's what i've learned about shoes. if you like a running shoe and they come out with a new version of the shoe, don't buy it. it won't work. it's not the same. you have to go to the store (hard) and try out a bunch of different shoes (bad. haven't actually done this part yet). the new shoe version is a trap. an evil trap designed to make you spend weeks walking around in shitty shoes

the whole thing about caring about your appearance has been a strange journey for me… it clicked when i separated my mind fully from my physical being and saw my body as a doll… my real self is a shadow orb and i dont think that will change
cant remember if i’ve talked about this on here but i think i have the uncurable type of dysphoria where there is no procedure that would turn me into the crystalline structure of the dream sphere…. so i must accept my body as it is
luckily i am very accepting

i think im going to start signing off all my work emails with
@###~~MIDWEST DYNASTY~~###@
don't tell anyone, flounder, but i think i might end a moment zine with the summer issue (the next one after this one). i do love it a lot but it's become more annoying than rewarding lately. it's a considerable amount of work and there are other projects i would rather work on. plus i think i will be leaving stl after next summer (don't quote me on that) so i would end it then anyway. i could try to "pass it on" to someone but i would kind of rather someone start their own zine. such is the flow of time and life
###may13 2
if i had a biology degree i would being saying the wiimote and the electric toothbrush are in the same genus but not the same clade or some shit like that

had a shockingly good convo with my mom today. i actually am feeling quite inspired by her, she takes all these art classes and i'm like damn i should go to more cute little local classes. i really want to see one of those risograph demos this person puts on every so often in stl
i am very similar to my mom in many ways and i think that kept us from ever truly connecting for a long time... but now we've been chill for a few years and it's nice. like having a kind older friend
my goals this summer are to engender grace and to (much like mario) be no slouch
also i have been very into the crossword lately and here is my current best idea for a crossword gimmick - certain words are spelled the british way, with a hint to that somewhere (you know how they do). would will shortz balk at this or love it?

dream report:
i was running a marathon that required you to army crawl the whole way, and if you were in first place it was expected (though not required) that you would unfurl a roll of felt about 1 foot wide as you crawled. then those behind you, as they crawled, would mark X's into the felt with a marker. i started the race in the middle of the pack, marking X's, but eventually found my way to the front. since there were no path markers, hundreds of people stood spaced out and pointed the way to go. then i would unfurl my felt so the rest of the racers knew the path. these direction people were of all ages. i didn't have felt until a young direction-pointing boy handed me a roll. eventually, i reached a garage full of stuff owned by mothbaby, and to get to the next part of the path she and i had to lift her couch out of storage to the driveway, where i could climb up it to continue my race. i woke up around then

it's weird to see and interact with the new garden president all the time like she's a real person, unlike the last guy who was a recluse. i badged her into the gate one day and now she waves at me all the time. she is really nice! i hope she does good things to us
speaking of the super mario games, did anyone else play the nyt connections on that day when "sunshine" "galaxy" "world" and "kart" were all options but it was a trick and there was no super mario category. that was fucked up and anti gamer and i didn't respect it!!!!!!!!!! >:-(
my youtube recommendations are getting worse and worse music-wise as i fall into the "deep house" pipeline
dont forget to vote in the papal conclave everyone

boss report
boss 1 - don't remember his name at wash u. chill guy. had nothing for me to do. ~15 yr old me summer "internship" in wash u IT. i read gamefaqs all day
boss 2 - lynn, my aunt's best friend. barely saw her. job arranging plants for the nursery that supplies them to walmart. spent most of my time alone in walmart. would wander the isles of walmart. she was nice though
boss 3 - pizza guy. can't remember his name. something like tim or bill. bald man who owned the pizza hut (enfranchised?). had a level head. did not tell jokes or talk about his life. appreciated my swiftness with pizza delivery
boss 4 - dr. price. insular and stuffy head of the university english TA program. liked me and i eventually saw her soft side. i am good at getting stuffy old women to like me. i think it is my inherent professionalism and tinyness. she was cool
boss 5, 6, 7 - had three jobs in seattle: starbucks, ACT tutor, and summer camp counselor. my bosses were more like a cabal of managers and shift leads. starbucks was the worst, there was a really annoying stuck up guy managing. actually the summer camp was the worst, for a while there was this super stuck up woman directly over me. she was not funny at all. i mostly rate bosses based on funniness. however i barely remember anything about these jobs so i forgive them all
boss 8 - my first real job boss, stacy. she was super smart and reasonably funny. she also gave me a ton of furniture when i moved back into town. she also let me rent a house for SUPER cheap from her. she had signed a lease on the house when her husband cheated on her, then they got back together so she didn't need the house anymore. very chill, did not seem to care that i was only at work for (generously) half the day.
boss 9 - my current boss. she is funny and nice, but a little micromanagy. i respect her very much. she is a determined sort and extremely smart. her and stacy are both english majors like me too. she is the "without her this place would fall apart" boss, which has benefits and drawbacks. works too many hours a week but doesn't necessarily expect her team to follow suit. overall... a good boss
