First Power Bill with Solar

07 October 2024

A quick analysis, since I've just received the first quarterly power bill since bringing home solar generation online.

Q3 2023

2374 grid kWh used

0.3071p average cost per kWh

Q3 2024

1376 grid kWh used

0.2856p average cost per kWh

That works out around 42% less grid power used compared to the same quarter last year, and includes June and July which were not full months of having solar generation active.

Overall power usage for the quarter, including consumed solar-generated power, was down but only very slightly.

There was also around 500kWh exported back to the grid that would have been better used to charge a battery or EV. The buyback rate was approximately 14p per kWh and has just been cut to 10p, so it makes sense to use the generated power somehow rather than sell it back for a pittance.

We're heading into the winter here in Northern Ireland and it will be interesting to see how the generation fares in the darker, shorter days ahead.
