Distraction Free Writing!!1
As part of my keyboard rabbit-hole, I've been thinking about what I'd like to do with the keyboard - mostly, it's just writing out entries for this gemlog. With occasional other writing on top of that. To that end, I've been considering distraction-free writing tools, most recently, the Freewrite Alpha.
I won't buy it, but one of the interesting ideas behind it is the screen. As someone who tends to go back and re-read my previous sentences and do editing while I'm still drafting, only being able to see three or four lines at a time while I'm drafting seems like it might actually make a difference. I feel as though I'm less likely to do that when I can't go and read the prior lines.
I realized I could do a similar thing with emacs by just making the window really small (Freewrite hates this one simple trick!), so I'm giving that a shot to write this entry. There is a major drawback showing up early: because I have a tendency to look up and let my mind wander, I come back to my writing not remembering all the context for what I was writing. The entries may turn out to be a bit disjointed because of that. Hmm.
Just like that, I've returned to full-screen emacs. And I'm reading all the lines. Maybe that's just how I write - I'm a basher, not a swooper, as described in this post of dozens'.
