Hm... I wonder if a town-of-salem type game would be doable over Gemini? It would probably have to be turn-based or something, but it'd be interesting.

Jackbox games are pretty much turn-based, and they make plenty of hidden identity games. It certainly sounds doable on gemini, but not trivial.

fun fact you can make games that dont require certs

Forum mafia is a) really fun, and b) works well in a text format like gemtext. I used to play a lot of it on phpbb forums. The issue with gemini is figuring out how to avoid multi-accounting, a kind of cheating that really breaks the game for everyone. browser-level certs wouldn't do it. check out webdiplomacy.net to see some of the games that happened there.

Functionally though, all you needs is a bulletin board framework... and bubble already exists. It wouldn't be hard to simply run a game on a section of this site, or a bb system with greater barriers to multi-account participation.

The added software that makes things really shine for forum mafia / salem / werewolf is pretty much: a bot that automatically announces day/night phases, collects player actions from PM-ing the bot, and tallys/repeates vote counts (or even post/word/character counts from players). That's not hard to do, but would require someone with the time/energy to make it happen, and a player base willing to give it a try.

Has anyone here played forum mafia / salem games before?

I used to play Werewolf (basically the same thing as Mafia) with a group of friends. Never played on a forum though - it was always in a chatroom. I might be up for it!
