Has anyone read the Space Trilogy by CS Lewis? He's got an entirely different take on space, aliens, exploration, and man's place in the cosmos. Really interesting.

Buymort — I've been reading Buymort (the shopocalypse saga) and I quite like it. It's a fun read. The first installment's my favourite. Book 2 and 3 are good too but the 4th (which I'm currently reading) is missing the panache of its predecessors. Here's the advertising blurb (which I find rather lacking): Some predicted that the AI singularity would result in robots destroying the world. None of them ever understood that it was the sales algorithms they had to be afraid of. After the...

Telluria vs Ubik — Haven't read Sorokin's novel yet, but when a friend originally told me about it, I thought he was describing Ubik!

Ubik (Philip Kindred Dick) — I was rereading Ubik and discovered, that I managed to completely forget Pat even existed. Considering what she does… The rereading did not disappoint 🐱☕

Recommend somewhat modern sci‐fi writers that you like — What are your favorite sci‐fi writers, that wrote something in the last 15 years? Preferably of non‐US origin, as those authors are usually the ones that get translated here, so I’ve read lots of ’em already. I want something new, different, I dunno. Bonus points for NOT describing space as a sea and all that marine stuff.

Lately I've been reading a lot of non-fiction books, especially self-help books, since I'd like to be a better person and lead a healthier life. well, I think it might be a good idea to share the books that helped me the most of all the ones I've read lately: "Stolen Focus" helped me a lot to understand how my attention was destroyed so much and how to interpret the signs that corrupt it, and then "The Courage to Be Disliked", I think this is the book that by itself helped me the most, this...

Just finished rereading the Silo Series books. Last time was when they were first released. I really enjoyed it and had forgotten a lot so it was like it was almost new again. I also lost sleep staying up turning pages. Recommend.

Thoughts on Kokoro, by Natsume Soseki — Since I've finished reading this book in September, I've found myself thinking back on various aspects of it time and time again, so maybe sharing these thoughts might be of some value. This is going to be more of a discussion, rather than a recommendation. I do recommend it though, especially if you like looking for subtle details and decyphering, bit by bit, a composition of someone's soul. The book is, for the most part, centered on a single person,...

Good books about China? — I've had this interest in China lately, but it's hard to find books, or documentaries, or anything that I'm looking for. Sure, there's a lot of books trying to explain the bits here and there, especially the contemporary political and economic goings on, as well as the historical and cultural overviews and such. What I'm looking for is, something that would explain the deeper things, the things that everybody would understand implicitly but wouldn't talk about, because...

Any opinions and ideas about the book "The Case for Degrowth" from Giorgos Kallis, Susan Paulson, Giacomo D'Alisa and Federico Demaria about degrowth here? I'm looking for more books about degrowth, preferably in a compact format. So that I can recommend them to interested friends. There's also a comic about degrowth out there. Thanks in advance

Favorite books - fun topic! I heard that your favorite book is probably one you wouldn’t recommend to people, so… here’s a small list of my top 10 (in no particular order) if someone wants to check them out! Feel free to post your own book lists! The weirder the better !! 🐛 • Kafka on the shore (Murakami) • Notes of a crocodile (Miaojin) • Our Share of Night (Enriquez) • 2666 (Bolaño) • Carcel de mujeres (Geel) • La mujer de sal (Gertner) • Little Eyes (Schweblin) • What I Loved (Hustvedt)...

“The plague” by Albert Camus I got this book a few weeks ago and I’m having a great time with it! A lot of the situations and issues it places are extremely relatable to me (in many ways) and feel extremely akin to modern times, especially in relation to the never-ending “progress” bullshit we’ve been fed lately. Maybe my reading of the book is a little too political, but I’m enjoying it a lot so far! Would love to read more works by Camus after this one, good stuff.

"Morgan is my name" — I've just finished "Morgan is my name", by Sophie Keetch (first published 2023) It's the first book of a trilogy retelling the Arthurian legends from the point of view of Morgan, Arthur's half sister. The premise of the book is that Arthurian legends have been told from the point of view of men - and in that view, Morgan, a strong willed woman striving for independence and freedom, has often been made into villain. This is the story told from her point of view. If you...

I finished reading The Wolf of Withervale by Joaquin Baldwin the other day. I had written a much, much longer review but then my client glitched. I'm taking that as a sign that I was too long-winded and will leave you this shorter review: In a post-apocalypse-post-rebuilding world, a guy and his best friend become embroiled in an international conflict after a woman from an uncontacted tribe who lived deep in a seemingly-impermeable dome finds him while she's on the brink of death, hands him...

“An island garden” — a sweet one I’m almost finishing “an island garden” by Celia Thaxter, and it’s been such a nice experience! I love how she describes the smallest details on her garden, and how she gives seemingly little dots of advice for whoever that needs them. It’s a sweet, warm book with such a passion for the subject of gardening that I’ve caught myself smiling at some descriptions of Thaxter’s love towards flowers. I love the little biologistic undertones too! Clearly, studies...

books I started 🪲 — I finally started reading again, some of the books I got for my birthday are “distant star” (Bolaño), “To the Lighthouse” (Woolf), “An island garden” (Thaxter) and “Sacred and Terrible Air” (Kurvitz). I’m specially excited for the last one, since I’m not too used to reading tougher books in english, and it’ll be a fun challenge! I’ll try to remember updating them, and how much I enjoyed each one.

Hiya guys, I've been trying to read Piers Ploughman (unmodernized) but the archaic language is very tiring and it's hard for me to stay motivated. Any tips?

I just finished the first book in the Murderbot series and I really liked it. it was recommended around here on Gemini somewhere. The first book was a quick read. Good story, decent bit of action, and interesting plot and character development. I haven't bought the second because I'm on the fence about the price tag. I might search around and buy direct instead of Kindle so the money goes hopefully more towards the author.

I've been obsessed with Jennifer Egan's work this year. I've been, very slowly, reading everything I can get my hands on... — If you have time for one book, definitely read "The Keep". It's really amazing, and cinematic - I felt like there was a movie playing in my head as I read it... Most of the rest of her books are deeply intertwined and should probably be read in the correct order. If you do go on this ride, you will find some amazing for the time predictions about the Internet, some of...

Hey all, anyone doing Space Opera September here? The formal announcement videos drop 8/30 but the prompts have been dropped in SFF180's community tab on Youtube ([https link]). Its a readathon (books/graphic novels, etc) centered on space opera. There is a discord channel and a storygraph challenge ([https link]). 🚀
